Vitis aestivalis-derived ‘Norton’ and V. interspecific hybrid ‘Chambourcin’ are popular red wine grapes in mid-Atlantic and Midwestern United States including Missouri. These cultivars are grown in regions with high disease pressure and cold winter temperatures where V. vinifera is not adapted. In view of this, two mapping populations about 300 individuals each were constructed from crosses of ‘Norton’ and V. vinifera ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ as well as ‘Chambourcin’ and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’. Results from these two populations will allow for comparison of disease resistance, cold hardiness and berry quality. The respective genetic linkage map of ‘Norton’ and ‘Chambourcin’ were constructed with both simple sequence repeat (SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Careful genetic mapping of these two populations will provide the foundation and tools to associate molecular markers with favorable traits. We are currently working on the localization of DNA markers tightly linked to several quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for future marker-assisted selection. Preliminary data will be further presented and discussed. The ultimate goal of this breeding program is to use genetic markers to rapidly deploy favorable alleles, improve efficiency of progeny/hybrid selection and accelerate breeding cycles for new cultivar releases.
